11-1-03 Host Kelly Ripa and musical guest Outkast...Cold Opening - Bush Address the Natio on Iraq - Darrell Hammond Hammond takes over as George W. I didn't think this was that good of an impression, but maybe it was a last minute decision to have him do it. I wonder why Parnell wasn't doing it. I didn't think Parnell was that great, but Hammond wasn't really an improvement. As for the sketch itself...how many times do we have to hear that WMD's have not been found? I'm willing to bet Tina Fey had a big hand in writing this. Grade - D Opening Monologue - Kelly Ripa, Rachel Dratch, a few writers. I thought the bit with the guy asking his wife why she couldn't look like Kelly Ripa after only having two kids compared with Ripa's three was funny. The rest I thought was not really good or bad, a pretty average monologue I guess. Grade - C Commerical - Tressant Supreme - Kelly Ripa Ripa parodies her Pantene commericials. Shampoo with crack cocaine in it is how she has so much energy? Does this not make sense to anyone else? I guess the coke gets rubbed into your scalp and is absorbed?...Whatever. Grade - D Live With Regis and Kelly - Darrell Hammond, Amy Poehler, Kelly Ripa, Seth Meyer and...Chris Kattan This is actually one of my favorites, and I figured they would be doing it tonight. Kattan returns as Gelman, I also had it in the back of my mind that he might show up. There have actually only been three episodes since he left the show and normally I would say it's a little soon for a return appearance, but how could they do Regis & Kelly without him? Also I remember Hammond on Letterman (I think it was) saying he hoped Kattan would come back to play Gelman. I liked the Halloween Parade line, since it's kind of an obscure reference. Ripa as Angelina Jolie was not that good. Was Jolie that stand-offish when she was on Regis & Kelly? Actually I don't even know if she was ever even on there, but I'm assuming they based it off something. I did like the "my brother and I broke up a long time ago," and the "Beyond Borders I can't believe how much it bombed" lines. Grade - B+ (I'll give it a little boost for Kattan, and Hammond is always good as Regis) Renee Zelleweger on Access Hollywood - Jimmy Fallon, Kelly Ripa, Horatio Sanz First Ripa does Angelina Jolie now Renee Zellewegger. I'm not sure why she is doing so many impressions, it's clearly not her forte and she actually has another one coming up. Apparently Kelly Ripa is under the impression all celebrities are total mindless morons, because that is how she played both Jolie and Zellewegger. So the whole thing here is that Zellewegger had to get a fat coach to bulk up for the Bridget Jones sequel. Sanz was kind of funny as the coach, seeing him stuff two whole twinkies in his mouth at the same time did make me laugh. Fallon was alright as Pat O'Brien, I think he does a decent impression. Grade - C+ Musical Performance - Outkast - Andre3000 Sometimes on SNL a rap act will somewhat reinterpret their own material by incorporating live instuments into the song, unfortunately that was not the case here. He just sings to a the pre-recorded backing track. Grade - N/A Weekend Update with Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon - Jeff Richards, Horatio Sanz I didn't think Fey's whole bit about the California wildfires being God's punishment for electing Schwarzenegger was funny, but it got a big laugh from the audience so I suppose I'm in the minority. Also Fallon's fairly tasteless joke about Price as Right announcer Rod Roddy in Hell didn't go over too well, and then he to carry it on after getting a couple boos from the audience? I'm not sure what he was going for, but it didn't work. Richards as drunk girl was okay, I'm not a huge fan of this character, but it's usually somewhat amusing. And last but not least, Horatio Sanz as Jimmy Buffet. I think they should put some space between having this schtick between Sanz and Fallon. I actually kind of like it, but it worked better when it didn't seem so planned. The first time when Sanz was Elton John was the best. Grade - B- The Methane Scientist - Will Forte, Kelly Ripa, Fred Armisen Have they really sunk this low? Forte is continuing to not win in points in my book. There is not one good thing to say about this. Grade - F Lelani Burk Pet Psychic - Maya Rudolph, Kelly Ripa, Horatio Sanz, Rachel Dratch Maya Rudolph attempting another another annoying talk show character. How many times are we going to see a sketch where the talk show host is more interested in themselves than the guests. Let's Brian Fellow comes to mind and he already did the animal thing. There was also that one with the model played by Molly Shannon and the Celine Dion show. This also vaguely reminded me of the Dog Show one with Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell. Grade - D Musical Performance - Outkast No comments Grade - N/A Spy Glass - Seth Meyer, Amy Poehler, Kelly Ripa, Rachel Dratch, Jimmy Fallon I have never seen the show they were spoofing, and I didn't think the plays on words were all that funny. I do think Seth Meyer gives a good effort though, he always seems into what he is doing. The audience was dead silent during Kelly Ripa's Geri Halliwell appearances and for good reason, since there was nothing funny. Fallon doing another Pat O'Brien in the same episode, that's kind of weird. Grade - D The Pet Adoption - Chris Parnell, Kelly Ripa This did not work at all. Neither Ripa or Parnell seemed like they really hated that puppy. This was a one joke sketch that just dragged on and on. Grade - C- This show was not really an improvement over the last one, but for some reason I didn't hate it as much. Maybe I was just in a better mood. |
