Punch Drunk Love - Movie D, DVD N/A

Let me start out with something positive about this movie. I liked Adam Sandler in it. I thought he broke out of his comfort zone a bit for this role, if only it had been the same role in a much better movie. Punch Drunk Love is not really about anything. It was marketed as a "different kind of romance." Maybe they were looking for a way to market it, but this only a romance on the most shallow level. Not only does this movie have to real story it has no real characters either. Sandler's love interest played by Emily Watson is never developed as a full fledged character. She is there more as every outcast's fantasy. She falls for him for no real reason and unconditionally loves him no matter what he does.

In addition to the romance, there is a convoluted storyline about a phone sex operator who decides to extort $500 (yes that's five hundred) from Sandler. No explanation is given as to why she is doing this, or the extremes she goes to for this. It seems as though there are two separate stories that have been precariously molded together.

This movie is luckily only about 95 minutes, unlike Anderson's way over long Boogie Nights and Magnolia, but it still feels too long. This movie is nothing but a big waste of time and talent. Here's hoping Sandler can find something better if he's looking to expand his career.

Also - I did not watch the second disc with all the special features, because I did not have it. I rented this from netflix, and only ordered the first disc. Since I didn't care for the movie, I didn't feel any desire to get the special features disc.
