SNL: The Best of Will FerrellDVD - A- The Best of Will Ferrell is one of the better SNL Best Of's I've seen. Most of the sketches chosen are good. Many are one's not aired repeatedly on the Comedy Central reruns, so I was able to see several that I had never seen before. There are of course sketches featuring Ferrell's most well known characters including; his Spartan cheerleader with Cheri Oteri, the Roxbury guy with Chris Kattan, the "lovah" with Rachel Dratch and an unfortunately brief appearance as Neil Diamond. There is the infamous "cowbell" Behind the Music Blue Oyster Cult sketch with Christopher Walken, and several others. The downside to this release, as with all SNL Best of DVD's and/or videos is the length. This on is only 72 minutes. I don't know why they can't be longer. It seems to me the DVD release could be longer than the version shown on NBC. There is a montage of little snippets of Ferrell where I would have liked to have seen the entire sketch. Also the last sketch, which is Ferrell as the voice immodulation disorder afflicted Victor Silj appearing on weekend update, is cut off at the end. I thought the end of this sketch was the funniest part and it is not even there. They couldn't have fit the last few seconds of this on the DVD? Negatives aside, I thought this was a very enjoyable disc. Aside from a pratically useless photo gallery, the extras were very good. We get Ferrell's SNL audition, a cut dress rehearsal sketch, and some pretty funny "outtakes." It's hard to have actual outtakes from a live show (some may have been from dress rehearsal), these are some goofups and clips of the cast laughing during a sketch. There are also two appearances from Ferrell on the Conan O'Brien show. If you are a fan of Will Ferrell, this DVD is not to be missed. Review by Sherry |
