Taylor Hicks and SNL....
If you end up being parodied on SNL is that good or bad? I guess I have to say it's ultimately good. SNL poked a little fun of Taylor on Weekend Update, and to my surprise they didn't exploit his missed microphone kick from the previous Tuesday. It was just Tina Fey finding out "what makes Taylor tick" and Jason Sudeikis doing a terrible impression of Taylor's woos and shouting "Soul Patrol." I like the shout out for Soul Patrol - Taylor's unofficial (quickly becoming official considering his weekly shout outs) fan base. The person who started the term on the American Idol boards must be extremely happy that it's now become a part of pop culture lexicon.
Overall the sketch was ok, maybe funnier than what they've been doing lately. It's great for Taylor in that he's probably the only one on AI they could do a memorable sketch for. Kellie Pickler would be a close second, but not exactly original material. I'm thinking the powers that be at SNL are more for Taylor than against him, so all in all it's a positive.
I was little puzzled that Sudeikis sang Creedence Clearwater Revival's Bad Moon Rising as an example of a Taylor Hicks song choice. He's never done that song or any other Creedence song on the show, and he's never even mentioned them as a band he likes.
A funny impression is one that uncannily captures the person being impersonated, and on that level Jason Sudeikis failed to deliver. Of course SNL has become the fast food of sketch comedy, so I shouldn't be surprised. You can see the clip here.
