Newsflash - Taylor Hicks was supposed to sing Try A Little Tenderness...

According to TV Week.com's weekly interview with American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, Taylor Hicks was supposed to sing Otis Redding's Try A Little Tenderness on Tuesday.

The reason for the "beginning of the week" (meaning Monday?) song change? Try A Little Tenderness didn't fit with the kind of music Andrea Bocelli would sing or David Foster would produce.

This is a complete outrage! It's just so unfair. As if Andrea Bocelli would sing Have You Really Ever Loved A Woman!

I don't mean to go on about Taylor all day, but this makes me mad. I hope he gets to do the song some other night - there are only 4 performance nights left.

No wonder he didn't seem into Just Once! The frustration continues.

Here is a transcript of Nigel's interview:

I didn't think Taylor was at his best last night. I think he appeared very nervous to me. There was one line that he just could not get the intonation over in the rehearsals, and I think that was really bugging him. And I think that those nerves came across last night. In his defense I've got to say he had to change his song at the beginning of the week. He chose another song to sing which, to be frank, we didn't think was in the genre. It's a tough genre if you're talking about classic lovesongs. And it was songs that...could we see Andrea Bocelli singing these songs? [Theother song was] When a Man Loves a woman...oh no it wasn't...Try a Littletenderness...I'm terribly sorry. It was Try a Little Tenderness. And I said well that's ok if we're doing the blues brothers week. But this is Andrea Boccelli week. And he sort of shrugged his shoulders and thought, "well oh allright. Let'sget on with it."So in his defense, he had to change his song. And credit to him.

Andrea Bocelli week? I thought it was classic love song week. And Try A Little Tenderdness for "Blues Brothers" week? Now I love the Blues Brothers, but lets give Try A Little Tenderness the credit it deserves.

What's with the last minute change? They couldn't have told him earlier his song wasn't right for the theme?

Also - how did Chris' version of Walk The Line fit with '50's week then?
