American Idol does "classic" love songs...A Review
The theme was supposed to be "classic" love songs, but they must have had a very short list of the lamest songs ever. Not a very good night for anyone except Elliott.
Here's my rank for the night:
1. Elliott Yamin - A Song For You by Donny Hathaway. This was probably one of the best performances from Elliott to date. Elliott clearly wants to stay in this and I hope he does.
2. Taylor Hicks - Just Once by James Ingram. I'll be the first to admit this was one of Taylor's weaker nights, but a not so good night for Taylor is still pretty good. During the parts of the song he was on, he sounded great, but seemed to be struggling during a lot of it. I like that the guests David Foster and Andrea Bocelli were positive about Taylor.
3. Katharine McPhee - I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston. The judges tore into her for this, and I'm not really sure why. I thought this was one of her best performances, if not the best. She was into it, and she actually sounded a little soulful. Maybe she oversang the end slightly, but I didn't think it was bad.
4. Chris Daughtry - Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman by Bryan Adams. An interesting song choice for "classics," but I guess none of the others were either. The judges loved it, but I thought it was just ok. I'm sure he'll get a boost, because it's a familiar song, he went last, and he sounded ok.
5. Paris Bennett - The Way We Were by Barbra Streisand. This was a horrible song choice, and just an ok vocal. I guess the vocal was about as good as you can get for the song, but she didn't do herself any favors with this song.
6. Kellie Pickler - Unchained Melody by The Righteous Brothers. Has Kellie given up on this competition. This may have been worse than her performance last week in that it was just bad, instead of that she made mistakes in the timing. If Kellie isn't in the bottom 3 this week, I don't know what's wrong.
Bottom 3 predictions: Paris, Kellie and I have no idea. Half the contestants will be in there, so it's getting hard to pick. Based on fan base I would say Elliott, but his strong performance should keep him safe. I think Taylor will still be ok, because his fan base is huge. Chris again? Katharine? Well I've named everyone, this one's too hard to figure.
Going home - Paris.
Udates: the morning of 4/26/06.
I usually write my review of the show the next day, but I decided to write it right after the show last night. I'm glad I did, because I wasn't influenced by any other reviews or other people's thoughts. If I had read those first, I would probably put Taylor at the bottom right above Kelly.
However I'm sticking to my original views, I have no change of heart. I listened to the mp3 of Taylor's performance, and I think it sounds pretty good. He has a couple trouble spots, but where he really tries it sounds good. I guess people listen to the judges more than I thought. I think Taylor's main problem is he wasn't really that into the song.
I'm not sure any of them were. I think they didn't have much to choose from. I have a hard time believing Taylor went into this competition wanting to sing James Ingram's Just Once, or Chris Daughtry was really excited to sing Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman, a lame song even by Bryan Adams standards. And Paris singing The Way We Were? Why?
I have ranked Katharine as my least favorite contestant, but her performance last night changed my mind. I thought the judges were way too harsh on her. Maybe it's because I hate Whitney Houston, so there was no comparison in my mind as she was singing it.
So Taylor Hicks fans don't be depressed by all the negative reviews, and the harsh words from the judges, unlike Kellie, that kind of thing usually makes Taylor come back with something good.
New bottom 3 predictions - lets go with the 3 girls in the bottom and the 3 guys safe. The producers gotta love that.

Sorry, sherry, I have to disagree.
Paris won't be going home. :)
I'm thinking it'll be Elliott or Kellie. They aren't cut for this and America should know this.
Taylor FINALLY FINALLY (thank goodness) chose not to dance (listening to us viewers) but then, it was a trade-off. His song was horrific. The singing good, the song choice horrific.
Couldn't he ever sing well WITHOUT dancing???
Anyway, again, Katherine and Chris rocked my world. One started the show, one ended the show, totally phenomenal!
Also, I think this would be right up Mandisa's alley... if only she was still in the competition
*sad*
