American Idol and the classic love song...
I still haven't figured out if this category is as broad as it seems. If you look at the American Idol message boards, it can mean anything from Etta James At Last to Foreigner's I Wanna Know What Love Is (yes this was a suggestion for Taylor to sing).
I love The Soul Patrol, and I'm glad Taylor has all the support he does, but some "members" need to familiarize themselves a little more with the kind of music Taylor does.
So not knowing what tonight will bring, I'm not sure how it will go. I know there are probably a few spoilers around, but I like not knowing what songs everyone is doing, until I watch the show.
Tonight is a crucial night for everyone --
The bottom 3 tomorrow will no doubt contain contestants no one wants to see leave.
Chris Daughtry - hasn't been able to do his rock thing much lately, and has suffered for it. His performance of the obscure Innuendo on Queen night, didn't leave much of an impression, and that one was sandwiched in between 2 ballads. Even going back to 21st Century night, his overbearing What If was not a great vocal performance, and Creed is a band hated by many rock fans. Chris needs to have a Hemorrhage type performance or he could be in trouble.
Kellie Pickler - Kellie admitted to butchering her song last week, but didn't even end up in the bottom 3. Will she stay impervious to bad performances? I think she won't. Everyone left in the competition is a better singer than her, and her dumb blonde act is wearing thin. She needs to give an all out good performance if she wants to remind people why she's really there. I'm doubting she'll be able to pull off something spectacular though.
Elliott Yamin - I don't know what more Elliott can do to draw a bigger fan base. He just needs to continue to bring the good vocals and see what happens. I think he should stick to just being himself on stage, and hope good singing will bring votes.
Paris Bennett - Paris probably has the smallest fan base of any of the remaining contestants, which is unfortunate because she has a great singing voice. Unfortunately she doesn't have a great speaking voice, and as petty as it might seem, it hurts her. She seems like a little kid when she talks, but sings like an adult woman. Her contant change of appearance hasn't helped her solidify a solid fan base. I think she may be hard to relate to for some people, because they just don't know what type of person she is.
Katharine McPhee - Katharine is making her bid for the top spot, and seems to be on the upswing. This will probably be a good week for her, though sometimes she is overconfident in her voice and picks a song that is too big for her. Most of all Katharine needs to work on her stage presence. So many people think she is arrogant, and it costs her some votes.
Taylor Hicks - Taylor has been the juggernaut of the competition so far, but can he hang on? He had some minor backlash last week, because of the whole choose the bottom 3 situation, but I don't think it will hurt him. It's infuriating that something that has nothing to do with his actual performances may hurt him, but he should be able to pull through. I think for that, and because the comepetition is tougher, he needs to give a great performance this week. Though he's given some great performances, he hasn't hit the excitement level of Takin' It To The Streets again. He's also had one completely lackluster performance and a one that didn't show off much about his singing abilities. My advice for Taylor is to stick to doing his own thing, like he did in the beginning, and pick songs that really show off his voice.
