King Kong and why do I keep anticipating movies???
Add King Kong to a long list of cinematic disappointments. It seems I rarely enjoy the movies I see in theaters lately. I think a part of it is that I'm getting older and going to the movies is not the experience it was when I was a kid.
When I was a kid, I had to wait for my mom to take me, and we would get popcorn or candy, and it was just an all around fun experience even if the movie was not that great.
Now I go to the movies whenever I want, and the prices keep me far away from the snack bar. That food is pretty unhealthy anyway (see what happens when you get older!).
Most of the time I don't look forward to movies that much -- but I was looking forward to King Kong. I like Jack Black, I thought the preview looked pretty good, and though I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan, I know Peter Jackson is supposed to be a good filmmaker.
I now realize I have only liked one Peter Jackson movie - Heavenly Creatures.
King Kong has good special effects, but we all know what they can do these days. It's hard to get blown away by that. The movie is just too long. It's over three hours, and it takes about an hour to get going, and then it just has no story.
Someone told me, before I went in, that the beginning was boring. I thought maybe they just didn't appreciate character building, but guess what? There is no character building. What they established about the characters could have been done in about ten minutes, or not at all, because none of it really matters. You could seriously walk into this movie an hour late and not miss anything.
One good aspect was King Kong himself. The digital ape was well done, and seemed like a real character. Unfortunately he was the only one who did seem to have real emotions. I actually did find myself choked up at the end, despite having been bored out of my mind for the previous 2 1/2 hours.
NaomiWatts did a decent job, but nothing to write home about.
Jack Black seemed a little over his head, or maybe he just wasn't given enough interesting stuff to do. He really left no impression on me. Same goes for Adrien Brody. There just wasn't enough good material for them to work with. This is not good for a three hour movie. Had this movie been 90 minutes, it would have been an action packed and exciting thrillride.
One other thing to note is that this movie earns its PG-13 rating. I wouldn't take any kid under 10 to see it. I heard some young kids in the audience asking their parents to leave during one of the more gruesome scenes.
Grade - C-
