DVD's - So many choices...

Want to rent the unrated widescreen Old School? I did, and luckily I was able to get it from Netflix. But sometimes I want something right away. I don't want to have to put it in my queue and then wait for it to be mailed to me. So my other option is to go to my local video store. However local doesn't mean the small family owned business that used to be right around the corner. My choices now are the nearby grocery store or the Hollywood and Blockbuster that are right across the street from each other (oh, how do I choose?). If I go to any of those places I probably won't be able to find the unrated version of anything. These place are "family friendly" and don't carry unrated movies. Chances are I also won't be able to find the widescreen version either. With Old School there are the unrated and R rated widescreen as well as full screen versions. That's four versions and most video stores are not going to get them all.

Lately it seems as though they are only getting full screen versions. I have been wondering what the public really likes more, or am I the only one who cares? I greatly prefer getting the widescreen version. Haven't people come to accept the black bars by now?

The number one movie at the box office this weekend was Bad Boys II. Coming in 2nd with only a 27% drop was Pirates of the Caribbean. According to Box Office Mojo Pirates of the Caribbean has the 21st largest 2nd weekend. I am wondering who really cares about that!? Frankly I am getting tired of the box office records. Every weekend it's something different, who really cares. The movie marketplace is not what it used to be even five years ago, so what difference do these records really make. What matters to me is if I will even be thinking about a movie two weeks later.

I can't believe how few movies I have seen this summer. It's not just because I have less time than I used to, it's because I really haven't wanted to see anything. I guess the excitement might be gone. Maybe I have just seen too many movies now, maybe too many bad or disappointing movies. Maybe it's because going to the theater is not the enjoyable experience it used to be. At any rate I am still hopefull of seeing something I really truly like in the near future.

Kill Bill....

I read that Miramax has split Quentin Tarantino's new film into 2 parts to be released separately. Why? Three hours, while maybe a little indulgent, is not that outrageous! Now they will be charging two admission prices for what is really one movie. Also is it meant to just end at some point right in the middle of the movie? I know 3 hours is long, but really, should we have to pay twice, just to not have to sit as long?

Happy Sunday!

The number 1 movie at the box office this weekend was Pirates of the Caribbean. #2 was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Can't say I have the desire to see either. T3 dropped about 55% to come in 3rd place.

TV Shows on DVD....

Though I don't actually watch many TV shows, I seem to have quite a few DVD releases of TV shows. I have recently bought, Strangers With Candy, The Man Show (yes I like that show) and most recently King of the Hill Season 1. King of the Hill is still one of my favorite shows, and the season 1 set is very good. In additioin to these more recent purchases, I already had, X-Files Seasons 1-5, Twin Peaks Season 1, Star Trek TNG Season 5 (I received this as a gift, haven't gotten to the other seasons yet), everything available from Beavis & Butthead, and several Twilight Zone discs.

I don't sit down and watch these regularly, but I do enjoy having them. They are there whenever I feel like watching them. They are good quality, have no commercials, and some have some interesting extra features. The main appeal for me is that I can watch them whenever I want. I guess that's why I don't watch many shows on TV, it is too hard to keep up with. I always get caught up in some series then I find myself programming my VCR or making frantic phone calls if I am going to miss it. Having shows on DVD is much more relaxing.

Now, I am waiting anxiously for the release of Seinfeld to DVD. Does it matter that it is on in syndication every night? Not really, I hardly ever get a chance to watch it during it's scheduled time. So, keep those TV DVD releases coming for those of us who "don't watch much TV."

More on T3....

Just a couple more things on T3....Possible spoilers, I'm not really going to give anything too big away, but if you don't want to know too much, I would wait to read this.

Knowing going in that there was not too much more they could do with the story, I thought they were still able to make this one pretty interesting. We all already know the basics, one terminator is sent back to protect John Connor and one is sent back to kill him. I liked the twist they added with the "No fate..." poem from the first two movies. At first I thought it would just be them trying to stop judgement day again. Luckily the story moves beyond that.

I also had mixed feelings, going in, about getting a different actor to play John Connor. I don't particularly like Eddie Furlong, but it sometimes is hard to think of someone as the same character when they are a completely different person. I did like Nick Stahl in this though. I decided to watch the DVD of the first Terminator when I got home and I was surprised at how much Stahl looks like Michael Biehn. However, though I like him, it was still hard to think of him as the John Connor from T2. I just kind of had to separate myself from that and look at this as its own thing.

Also missing from the movie was the Sarah Connor character. It is unfortunate she is not in it as she was really the identifying character in the first two. The John Connor character just doesn't have the same presence she did. Don't get me wrong. I am not changing my mind about liking the movie, I'm just pointing out a couple things. I still think the movie was a lot of fun, and did not turn out to be the embarrassment I thought it was going to be.

TERMINATOR 3

Well, I have to say I was surprised by this movie. I wasn't really expecting it to be that good, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. I think the best thing about it is that it didn't take itself to seriously. There were actually quite a few funny parts, as well as some pretty good action sequences. So all in all I had a good time watching it.

As far as summer popcorn flick goes T3 is by an far way better than something like The Hulk. The Hulk is a movie that took itself way to seriously. It was completely unhumorous and there was not an once of fun it in as far as I'm concerned. T3 doesn't disappoint.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

Hope everyone is having a good holiday. The big movie this weekend is of course T3. I am planning to see it tomorrow, so I should have a post about it then.

To get caught up here are the last couple of movies I saw:
In the theater - The Hulk
The Hulk was one of my most disappointing movies in a while, and I wasn't even expecting all that much. I just thought it was really boring. The CG Hulk was ok, but I guess I'm not really in to that. I'd rather have a good (fun, entertaining etc.) story with less impressive special effects, given the choice. I would especially advise anyone planning to take young kids to think twice. This movie is 2 1/2 hours with previews and we don't even see the Hulk for quite some time. There is not much to keep young kids (or anyone else in my opinion) entertained. The audience I saw it with seemed pretty restless.

On DVD - The Mission
The Mission stars Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons. I didn't know anything about this film before I saw it, but I was completely swept up in it once I started watching it. The story takes place in South America during the colonial times and revolves around some Jesuit priests who are trying to protect the native citizens. This may sound a little boring, but I assure you it is not. The performance in this film are excellent. This may be one of DeNiro's forgotten roles and it is well worth checking out.

Welcome to my movie log. This is the first post, so I guess I will just have an introduction. On here I will post quick thoughts on movies I've recently seen in the theater or on DVD. Or possibly I will post some other entertainment related information or news. Basically, anything goes.
